Apple’s Diverse iPhone Event Clashes With Internal Diversity Numbers

Yesterday, Apple released three new iPhones at their annual showcase, the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max, and iPhone Xr. As part of the demonstration, Apple Senior Vice President of Marketing Phil Schiller flaunted the increased quality of the upgraded camera system. Every image that showcased the camera’s power featured either a woman or person of color. While we want to commend Apple for striving for diversity in their campaigns, the same diversity initiative is not reflected in the company’s internal culture. Apple's 2017 diversity report showed that 68 percent of its employees were male and 54 percent were white. Furthermore, in leadership roles, 71 percent were male and 66 percent white. Since the disparity is evidence of a larger male-dominated trend within the tech sector, we can only hope that Apple will strive for a more inclusive culture at the heart of the company, and not just the face of marketing.
